FIFTEEN

Driving into town, the anticipation made my teeth almost chatter. I wanted to stay calm and collected for Penny, to guide her through this experience, but on the inside, I was losing my goddamn mind.

I couldn’t get over the feelings Penny brought up in me. Everything about her just made me swoon…and use words like swoon!

Penny tapped her hand on the gearshift of the car as we sat at a red light. If I was nervous, I could only assume she was ten times more nervous.

“Everything ok?” I said. I put my hand over hers to still the motion.

“Yeah, yeah” she said to me sharply, biting at the tip of her thumbnail.

“Penny, I don’t need a psychology degree to be able to tell you’re not telling the truth.”

Penny smiled, caught again, “alright you got me, I’m worried as hell, and I’m apparently not hiding it at all.”

“Worried about what?” I said.

“I’m worried I won’t be any good at it” Penny winced at the admission as we pulled up to a red light, “I’m worried I’m going to fumble around, and disappoint you, and make a mess of the whole thing.”

I gripped her hand harder, “you’re probably going to do some things wrong, and you’re probably going to do some things right. I’ll let you know if you’re doing something the wrong way, and I’m pretty sure you’ll know when you’re doing something the right way.” I gave her hand an extra squeeze.

We got into the small city closest to Ashwood, one of those homogenous blobs that popped up around every interstate exit. This little sapphic adventure wasn’t exactly going to be Penny sweeping me off my feet and taking me to Paris, but it would do, considering the circumstances.

Penny and I stopped a couple of places in town since she couldn’t negotiate a sooner check-in time than noon. We milled around a Target for a while, getting a selection of the finest non-alcoholic drinks available in the store. I wanted so badly to share another bottle of wine with Penny and let ourselves give way to the blurry and carefree aura it created, but doing this sober was important to Penny and so it was important to me.

Finally, achingly, it was noon and we were able to check in. Penny and I flirted openly as the clerk checked us in, and there was something so liberating about it. If she’d been sheepish about being seen with a woman half her age, she’d lost all of that, at least for a while. She even kissed me while he was entering her info into the computer. I’d never been this flirty and open with someone, and it was absolutely exhilarating.

Penny led me to the room, carrying the few bags of stuff we’d gotten at the store, which Penny insisted on carrying herself for some reason.

I swiped the key and opened the door, leading Penny into the room. We were on the seventh floor, the top floor in this small hotel, and the view was pretty amazing.
